Sports Betting Tips for Beginners

Intro

Learning how to bet correctly and knowing all of the ins and outs of gambling does not happen overnight. The gambling market is massive and there are pros and rookies all over the world. There are so many different ways to wager on different sports and different types of bets that it makes it easy to see why beginners make mistakes. Here are a few betting tips for bettors just getting into the market. If you follow these tips, you will be in a better position to start gambling.

Know it? Bet it.

Gamblers are not always massive sport fans; some sportsbook customers are gamblers first and then sport fans second. However I am sure you brought some knowledge with you and because you are reading this you are no longer a “newbie”. Everyone has their own sports knowledge bank and their favorite sports that they like to watch. The first tip would be to bet on sports that you know something about. If you never miss your teams hockey game, start betting on NHL. You will eventually learn more about other sports, but in the beginning, stick to sports that you already have an understanding of.

Emotions? Forget them.

I know we just told you if you're starting out to bet what you know, but there’s a difference between placing wagers on sports you’re familiar with and betting with your heart. Just because you have a piece of paper (diploma) from some college or high school and own the point guards jersey of your hometown NBA team does not mean that wagers on those teams are the best move. It’s one thing to be a sports fan, it is another thing to be a sports investor. Don’t be afraid to bet against your favorite team just because you want to cheer for them.

What is Downtime?

There is downtime in every sport, every team will experience it. Downtime will affect different sports in different ways. In the NFL and CFB, a bye week gives the team time to rest and plan for an upcoming opponent. However, if an MLB team finishes a playoff series early and has to wait for their opponent’s series to finish, they may be out of practice or shape. By understanding how these days off will affect the teams that you bet on, you will have another advantage when placing your bet.

KISS: Keep it simple, stupid.

Gambling can get complex, if you want it to be. There are props, parlays, teasers, and of course The Grand Salami. Don’t be afraid to just stick to the basics and just make wagers on the outcome of games you’re familiar with. Start with just a few bets and get used to it, then experiment with more complex wagers.
